How the sculptures are made in my woodshop

Making these sculptures has been a very rewarding experience for me and I am sure it will be for you, too.

This page contains a brief description of the process I go through to make the sculptures in my woodshop at home. In the videos I go into much, much greater detail. The videos will guide you through the process so that you will make fewer mistakes than I did.

The materials and tools I use in this process are really quite simple: a unique imported wood, bandsaw, wood glue, nails, 4.5" and a 7" grinder, a drum sander, lacquer, and a sprayer. The grinders and drum sander have been the best time-saving devices in my shop.

Here is a rundown of the steps I go through:

  1. I cut the shapes out of the wood with my bandsaw.
  2. I glue the shapes together and put nails in the proper places to keep the pieces from shifting.
  3. I use the 4.5 inch and 7 inch grinders to remove the edges and smooth out the shapes.

Here is the basic form, not yet shaped with a grinder.
  1. I sand the sculptures with a drum sander, then I
  2. Spray the sculptures with lacquer

At one time I had a shop with eight people working in it, all making these sculptures. We sold thousands of these every year. So, you can see, this is something you could do, too.
